Hemodialysis is a therapeutic procedure that serves as a replacement for kidney function by cleansing the blood using a specialized machine and an external filter, known as a dialyzer. During this process, blood is extracted from the body through a designated access site, such as an arteriovenous fistula or a catheter. The blood then passes through the dialyzer, where waste products, excess fluid, and select minerals are removed before the blood returns to the body. This treatment is typically administered in a dialysis center three to five times per week, although it may also be performed at home with appropriate training.
